In God's Eyes, Are You Rich or Poor?
Bob Larranaga
". . . One thing is wanting unto thee: go, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me." (Mark 10: 21)
Saint Mark noted that upon hearing Jesus, the young rich man "went away sorrowful: for he was one that had great possessions." He just couldn't let go of what he owned. He couldn't give without counting the cost. The bigger the bankroll the tighter the rubber band.
Jesus didn't call the rich young man to a life of poverty for its own sake – there is no merit in being poor. Not every pauper is a saint nor is every saint a pauper. That was not Jesus' point. He called the rich man to examine his values and embrace a life of generosity. When we give freely, we free ourselves of the need for more and more. That's when we discover that our true worth in God's eyes is beyond measure.
